PPE for more extreme situations (non violent) #

As we move forward in resisting fascism, danger seems to be escalating, and actions are becoming more aggressive against completely peaceful protesters. If they’ll pepper spray an inflatable frog, they’ll pepper spray anybody.

We need to do what we can to keep ourselves and those around us safe, so I’ve put together this non-exhaustive list of items, their use, and where to find them. While it may seem crazy, if you think you’ll need some of these items, I recommend getting them sooner rather than later as they may be harder to get.

If I’ve missed anything that you think should be included here, please let me know.

  1. Know Your Rights Card
    • It’s hard to remember everything when the Shit Hits the Fan, so having a Know Your Rights card on hand is great for remembering what they may lawfully do and what you are lawfully required to do. When in doubt. Exercise your right to remain silent.
  2. Whistles
    • Used to draw attention to a situation or to get help: We typically have these available at PBR gatherings, but can be ordered online.
  3. Handkerchief
    • Used for wiping and cleaning, It’s good to carry a few.
  4. Carry Bag or Backpack
    • Bag for carrying your PPE and other items. Whenever possible, you’ll want to keep your hands free. Everything needs to either fit in your bag, be carried on your belt, or have a place to live that’s not in your hand.
  5. Ziplock Bags
    • Use ziplock bags to keep items organized and clean in your carry bag.
  6. First Aid Kit
    • Even if it’s just some sanitizer and band-aids, it’s better than nothing if you have a small injury. Pack what you’re comfortable with carrying.
  7. Water (x2)
    • Water for drinking and water for cleaning if things get rough.
  8. Safety Glasses or goggles to keep your eyes protected
    • There are a couple different ways to go with safety glasses.
      • Projectile Protection. Standard range or workshop glasses are fine in this case:
        • Wearing over Prescription Glasses: Allen Company - Ballistic Eye Protection for Men and Women - Shooting Accessories That Work with Prescription Glasses https://a.co/d/8zE2e7N
        • Standard Safety Glasses: Limited-time deal: TICONN Clear Safety Glasses for Men, Safety Goggles with Scratch Impact Resistant Meets ANSI Z87.1 Standard https://a.co/d/hmGAPrR
    • Teargas or other protection
      • Works with Prescription Glasses (I use mine while chopping onions): Limited-time deal: NoCry Anti Fog Safety Goggles Over Glasses For Men And Women — ANSI Z87.1 Premium Anti Scratch & UV380 — Eye Protection with Panoramic Lens & Adjustable Strap — Perfect Dust Goggles for Chemistry Lab https://a.co/d/gJxjt70
  9. Respirator or Gas Mask
    • If you’re in a situation where you may encounter teargas or other airborne agents, you’ll want something to help you breath. A respirator with Organic Filters will help protect you against Teargas. Teargas is also a skin irritant, so while a respirator and pair of goggles will help, you’ll still need to cleanup once you are in a safe space to do so. Be sure to select the right size for your head. Many respirators do not come with filters, be sure to order extras since they don’t last forever, especially when used in a harsh environment.
      • Full Face Respirator (Kinda works with glasses, but is not terribly comfortable because the arms will press into your head. Fine for short term wearing). Without glasses, this is great: Parcil Distribution Full Face Respirator Mask with Filters – Durable Full Face Respirator Gas Mask, Bayonet Filter Compatible https://a.co/d/gc8QbEv
      • I like this half face piece respirator because it can easily flip down and hang lower on the face when not in use and flip back up when needed: 3M Rugged Comfort Quick Latch Half Facepiece Reusable Respirator 6503QL, NIOSH, Cool Flow Exhalation Valve, Bayonet Connection, Silicone Face Seal, for Gases, Vapors, Dust, Maintenance, Construction,L https://a.co/d/62ppKNR
      • Spare Filters. Be sure to get organic vapor filters. Filters with a plastic cover are better, but are more expensive: 3M P100 Respirator Cartridge/Filter 60923, 1 Pair, NIOSH Approved, Helps Protect Against Organic Vapors, Acid Gases, and Particulates, Magenta, Yellow https://a.co/d/11tTSnD3M Organic Vapor Performance Cartridge, 3 Pairs, For Use With 3M 6000, 6500 & 7500 Series Facepieces, NIOSH-APPROVED OV For Use Against Certain Organic Vapors, Easy-To-Attach Design (6001P3-DC) https://a.co/d/bUkTNGY
    • Gas Mask Pouch: This straps to your leg for quick access to your PPE should you need it. Big enough to hold Hearing Protection, Safety Goggles and Gas Mask or Respirator.
  10. Earplugs/Hearing Protection: If the environment gets noisy, you’re gonna need to protect your hearing:
    • Earplugs
      • I like these because they have a cord connecting between them. They are reusable, so a box will last a while: Dison 100Pairs Silicone Ear Plugs, 32dB Corded Reusable Earplugs for Hearing Protection, Noise Reduction for Shooting Range, Work, Travel https://a.co/d/9C0H8GN
      • These are good because they'll create a good seal and block out 33db: https://a.co/d/69GZAKi
    • Earmuffs (over ear). These are better than earplugs for blocking loud noises but are bulkier and will take up more space in your bag.
  11. Phone or Camera: We need to be recording every atrocity to hold the perpetrators accountable. If you record something that needs to be preserved, download and save the video to you're computer and/or to a external drive. This is going to be very important to defend ourselves if/when ICE or Law Enforcement decide to lie about what happened.
    • Body Cam: When the SHTF, you may not always think to pull out your camera to start recording. Going into a situation already recording will get footage without needing to remember. Here are a couple of body cams that we’ve tried out or have good reviews.
      • Meoilkolnm 4K 128GB Mini Body Camera, Wearable Action Body Cam, Thumb Size Hands Free Recording Body Worn Camera, Premium Portable Camcorder Mount Anywhere for Pet Walking, Work, Travel (Black) https://a.co/d/7k06M1g
      • SixBondsCam 4K Body Camera with Audio and Video Recording, 128GB Mini Wearable Cam with Magnetic Lanyard, Body Worn Camera for Travel, Cycling, Work Security, Police Law Enforcement https://a.co/d/2UhV90j
      • BOBLOV D7 2K Body Camera, 256GB GPS 2 * 1950mAh Batteries with Charging Dock, IP67 Waterproof, Body Camera with Audio and Video Recording, 170° Wide-Angle, Night Vision for Security Law Enforcement https://a.co/d/23POtS5
  12. Poncho: to keep dry and create a barrier between you and chemical irritants. I recommend getting multiple disposable poncho's and stash them away in your car, bag, etc.
